Leverage

Structure

Debt used to finance a purchase. In a leveraged buyout, most of the purchase price is funded with debt that the company itself carries. Leverage magnifies returns on equity, but it also increases risk if earnings fall.

Example

A 60 percent debt, 40 percent equity structure means the equity base is only a fraction of the purchase price.
