Henry Kravis
Who they were
Henry Kravis co-founded KKR in 1976 with George Roberts and Jerome Kohlberg Jr. and led the firm's investment decisions through its formative decades. He was a central figure in the 1980s leveraged-buyout boom and later co-authored influential work on private equity's institutional role. Kravis has remained a senior figure at KKR and is one of the most recognized names in the history of private equity.
Why it mattered
Kravis helped establish private equity as a legitimate institutional asset class, arguing publicly for decades that PE creates value and deserves a place in long-term portfolios. His work on the economics of sponsorships, fees, and value creation is still cited across the industry, and his career is a reference point for how a small group of investors can build a durable, high-performing institution.
The AI angle
Kravis's legacy framework for judging sponsor value creation is the lens through which AI-era PE is evaluated. AI extends that framework by giving sponsors the tools to track value creation in real time, model the expected impact of operational improvements, and stress-test the assumptions behind a deal's return profile.
