Jerome Kohlberg Jr.
Who they were
Jerome Kohlberg Jr. co-founded KKR in 1976 with George Roberts and Henry Kravis and was one of the firm's most senior partners during its formative years. He was involved in some of the largest leveraged buyouts of the 1980s and was known for his operational focus and his ability to work with portfolio-company management teams. Kohlberg remained a senior figure at KKR for decades and was a key voice in the firm's early development.
Why it mattered
Kohlberg was one of the original architects of the modern private equity firm, and his work at KKR during the 1980s and 1990s helped establish the firm as the leading sponsor of the leveraged-buyout era. His operational focus and his emphasis on working with portfolio companies set the template for how PE firms think about value creation, a principle that is still central to the industry today.
The AI angle
Kohlberg's operational focus was about working with portfolio companies to drive performance. AI extends that discipline by giving sponsors the tools to track performance in real time, identify the specific levers that drive improvement, and model the expected impact of operational changes before they are implemented.
