Tom Perkins

1970s-2000s · Early buyout pioneer and venture investor

Who they were

Tom Perkins made his first leveraged buyout in 1971, when he helped take the electronics firm Dyal Corp. private, making him one of the earliest practitioners of the modern buyout model. He later co-founded Dyal Ventures and became a prominent venture investor in San Francisco, backing companies that included early-stage internet and software businesses.

Why it mattered

Perkins is one of the few people who lived through both the birth of the buyout era and the rise of venture capital, and his career is a useful bridge between the two disciplines. His early work showed that a small group of investors could take a company private, restructure it, and return it to a higher level of performance, the core idea behind private equity.

The AI angle

Perkins's buyout playbook was about operational improvement and focused ownership. AI extends that playbook by giving sponsors the data and models to identify, underwrite, and manage operational improvements at a scale that was not possible in the 1970s or 1980s.
